Nobody Starts at Extremely Hot

Heat tolerance isn't a gift — it's a skill, and it trains like one. The first time a serious sauce hits, all you taste is the burn. Eat your way up and the burn moves to the background, and everything underneath it — the smoke, the fruit, the roast — comes forward. That's the whole idea behind the Firepower lineup: a ladder from Flame 1 to Flame 5, so you can start where you're comfortable and climb when you're ready.

One thing we'll say loud: hotter does not mean less flavor. That's a beginner's-palate myth. Every level is built to taste like something — the heat is just the volume knob.

A quick note on our scale: Firepower Flames are about the eating experience, not a literal Scoville reading. Even our Flame 1 has real presence. Think of it as how hard the sauce works, not just how high the pepper scores.

The ladder

Flame 1 — The warm-up Smoky Ghost (1/5) — Smoky, a little sweet, genuinely easy — but not a pushover. This is where you build the habit. Put it on eggs, grilled chicken, burgers, a sandwich that needs waking up. If you think you "can't do spicy," start here and prove yourself wrong. → Shop Smoky Ghost (Flame 1)

Flame 2 — Finding your flavor Tangy Habanero · Venom Verde · Pineapple Bomb (all 2/5) — Three sauces, similar heat, three completely different personalities — this is the tier where you stop thinking about the burn and start picking by taste. Tangy Habanero leans bright and a little Caribbean; Venom Verde is sharp, green and herby; Pineapple Bomb is tropical, sweet and lightly smoky. Great on tacos, seafood, pizza, BBQ. The Medium Heat Bundle is the easy way to taste all three. → Shop Flame 2 sauces

Flame 3 — Real heat Smoky Ghost (3/5) — our best-seller — The grown-up version of the Flame 1: same smoky backbone, a lot more fire, with a slow burn that creeps up rather than slaps. This is the one our regulars reorder. Built for BBQ, brisket, ribs, wings and steak. If Flame 1 feels like nothing anymore, you've graduated. → Shop Smoky Ghost (Flame 3)

Flame 5 — The deep end Smoky Reaper (5/5) — limited — The jump from 3 to 5 is real — the Reaper is a different animal. Layered, extreme heat that still tastes like food, not just pain. Made in tiny batches a few times a year, and it sells out. This is the top of the ladder, for chili-heads who've earned the climb. → Shop Smoky Reaper

(No Flame 4 in the lineup right now — the Reaper's leap is intentional.)

Train your tolerance (the part nobody tells you)

Heat is carried by capsaicin, and your mouth genuinely adapts to it with repeated exposure — the receptors that scream "fire" turn the volume down over time. So the move is simple: eat the flame level you're at regularly, and step up when it stops feeling like much. A few things that help while you climb:

  • Pair it with fat or starch — dairy, avocado, rice, bread. Capsaicin is oil-soluble, so water just spreads it around; fat actually carries it away.
  • Go little and often. A dab on every meal builds tolerance faster than one heroic mouthful once a month.
  • Don't skip flame levels to look tough. You'll just taste pain and miss the flavor — which is the opposite of the point.

Where the peppers sit (the Scoville scale)

Scoville (SHU) measures a pepper's raw heat. For reference, the chilies behind our sauces:

  • Jalapeño: ~2,500–8,000 SHU
  • Thai Orange Spur: ~5,000–30,000 SHU
  • Thai Jinda: ~35,000–75,000 SHU
  • Thai Bird's Eye: ~50,000–100,000 SHU
  • Habanero: ~100,000–350,000 SHU
  • Ghost pepper (bhut jolokia): ~800,000–1,000,000 SHU
  • Carolina Reaper: ~1,400,000–2,200,000 SHU

Still not sure where to land? Start at Flame 1 and climb, or grab a bundle and skip the guesswork. Either way, you'll taste more than the burn — that's the point.
